Have you ever noticed that the most boring moments in life aren’t when you have absolutely nothing to do? Sometimes, doing nothing is a rare luxury. No, what really bores me — and I suspect I am not alone in this — is the feeling of being stuck on repeat.
Boredom is the endless scrolling on your phone when you aren’t actually looking for anything. It is having surface-level small talk about the weather when you would rather be discussing something real. It is the mindless routine of doing the exact same chores, at the exact same time, every single day, without any spark of joy or sense of progress.
We are all wired to look forward to things. We want to grow, to build, and to experience new chapters. When life starts to feel like a treadmill — where you are putting in a ton of effort but staying in the exact same place — that is when the deep, heavy boredom sets in. It drains your energy faster than a hard day of actual work.
Ultimately, what bores me is just a lack of purpose. Give me a challenge, a messy problem to solve, or something exciting to plan for, and I am completely locked in. Take that away, and time stands still. True engagement requires movement, and without it, we simply fade.
